Pizza Boxes That Keep the Crust Crisp

Our pizza boxes are food-grade corrugated and paperboard boxes from 7 to 20 inch, with die-cut venting, grease-resistant liners and custom printing from 10,000 pieces. A pizza box is not a simple carton — it is a moisture-management system. The wrong vent pattern traps steam and the crust goes soft within fifteen minutes; the right one lets vapour escape while holding heat against a delivery run.

This page covers the specifications that matter in practice: board grade and ECT against load, vent configuration against bake style, grease resistance against topping load, and the printing options that turn the lid into the most-seen piece of brand real estate your shop owns.

Pizza Box Sizes & Specifications

Sizes are quoted in inches, matching how pizza shops order. All formats are available in corrugated or solid paperboard, with or without venting.

Board grade is a strength decision, not a cosmetic one. E-flute gives a thinner, crisper box that suits small formats and lighter loads. B-flute is the workhorse for 12–16 inch pizzas — enough compression strength for stacking three or four boxes in a delivery bag without the bottom one collapsing.

Venting: The Detail That Decides Crust Quality

Steam is the enemy of a crisp base. A hot pizza releases moisture continuously for the first ten to fifteen minutes after it leaves the oven — if that vapour cannot escape, it condenses on the lid and drips back onto the crust. The vent pattern is therefore the single most performance-relevant specification in the box.

Corner vent slots

The standard pattern: four die-cut slots at the corners, sized to release vapour without letting heat out too quickly. Suitable for most delivery windows. The count and length of the slots are what you should specify, not just "vented".

Round vent holes

Common on heavier topping loads and on boxes used for longer delivery runs. Holes vent more evenly than slots but weaken the board slightly more — a trade-off worth testing with your actual bake and route.

Grease resistance

An uncoated kraft box will show grease within twenty minutes on a cheese-heavy pizza. Specify a grease-resistant liner or a coated board when the menu runs high-fat. The liner is food-contact — it must be FDA compliant, not just "greaseproof paper".

One practical note: venting and heat retention pull against each other. More vents means crisper crust and faster cooling. For a fifteen-minute delivery, the standard corner-slot pattern is usually right; for longer routes, test a reduced vent area before committing — customers notice a cold pizza before they notice a slightly softer base.

Custom Printing — The Lid Is Your Billboard

A pizza box lid is seen flat, at close range, by every customer who opens the box — and by anyone walking past a stack of deliveries. It is the cheapest brand real estate in the food business. We print flexo up to 6 colours, with full-lid coverage and optional inside-lid printing for coupons or menu prompts.

Print specifications

Artwork in AI/PDF/EPS at 300 DPI, 3 mm bleed, laid out on the box lid development. Flexo prints well on kraft and white top liners; white top gives more accurate colour reproduction but costs slightly more.

Functional printing

QR codes linking to allergen information, reorder pages or loyalty sign-ups. Print at a minimum 20 mm module for reliable scanning on corrugated surfaces — small QR codes on kraft board fail more often than most designers expect.

Inside-lid options

Discount codes, social handles, or a simple thank-you note printed inside the lid. Seen at the exact moment of opening — the highest-attention moment in the delivery experience.

Pizza Boxes — Frequently Asked Questions

What board grade should I choose for pizza boxes?

For 12–16 inch pizzas, B-flute is the practical default — enough compression strength to stack three or four boxes in a delivery bag without collapsing the bottom one. E-flute suits smaller formats (7–10 inch) where a thinner, crisper box is preferred. BC-flute is for party sizes and catering loads. If you stack higher than four boxes, test the bottom box under load before committing to a production run.

Do pizza boxes need vent holes?

Yes, for almost every application. A hot pizza releases steam for the first 10–15 minutes after baking; without venting, that vapour condenses on the lid and drips back onto the crust, making it soggy. The standard is four die-cut corner slots. For longer delivery routes, round vent holes distribute airflow more evenly, though they weaken the board slightly more.

Are your pizza boxes grease resistant?

Uncoated kraft boxes will show grease within about twenty minutes on a cheese-heavy pizza. For high-fat menus we recommend a grease-resistant liner or coated board. Note that the liner is a food-contact material and must meet FDA requirements — "greaseproof paper" is not automatically food safe, so we supply documentation with each shipment.

Can I print my logo and menu on the box?

Yes — flexo printing up to 6 colours across the full lid, plus inside-lid printing for coupons or menu prompts. MOQ for custom print is 10,000 pieces per size and design. Plain kraft boxes are available at lower quantities if you want to start with a stock box and validate the fit first.

Do you also supply burger boxes and other takeaway cartons?

Yes. The same plant produces burger boxes, takeaway cartons, and paper food containers using the same board grades and printing lines. If you are consolidating a takeaway packaging order, we can combine formats into one container to reduce freight cost per unit — see our paper boxes and trays page for the full range.

Are pizza boxes recyclable?

The board itself recycles in standard paper streams. The practical constraint is grease contamination — heavily greased boxes are usually excluded by municipal recycling programs. Specifying a grease-resistant liner helps keep the board clean enough to recycle, but local rules vary and should be checked for your market.

What is the lead time for a first order?

15–25 working days after sample approval for stock formats; add 5–7 working days for custom print. For a first order we recommend requesting physical samples for a fit and stacking test before committing to a print run — board strength and vent behaviour are best verified with your actual pizza and delivery route.
