Salad Bowls — Round Paper Bowls for Salads, Soups & Takeaway
Paper Salad Bowls Built for Takeaway Menus
Our round salad bowls are food-grade paper bowls for cold salads, grain bowls and hot soups — available from 8 oz to 32 oz, with PE, PLA or aqueous coatings, and custom printing from 50,000 pieces. The round format is the workhorse of takeaway menus: it stacks compactly, holds dressing without wicking through, and presents cleanly on delivery platforms where the bowl is photographed far more often than it is eaten in.
Paper bowls outsell plastic clamshells in most food-service channels for one practical reason: they are lighter per unit volume, they nest tighter in storage, and they carry better sustainability credentials without a premium that breaks the menu math. For salad bars, catering kitchens, and delivery-first restaurants, the round paper bowl has become the default container.
Paper Bowl Sizes & Specifications
Sizes are quoted by fluid ounce and by diameter. The table below covers the formats we produce most; custom diameters and depths are available against tooling.
| Size | Capacity | Top Ø | Material | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 oz | ~240 ml | 90 mm | 210 GSM + PE | Side salad, dessert, small soup |
| 12 oz | ~350 ml | 98 mm | 260 GSM + PE/PLA | Noodle soup, ramen, small grain bowl |
| 16 oz | ~470 ml | 115 mm | 280 GSM + PE/PLA | Standard takeaway soup, salad bar |
| 24 oz | ~700 ml | 130 mm | 300 GSM + PE | Family soup, large salad |
| 32 oz | ~950 ml | 150 mm | 320 GSM + PE | Catering, meal-prep bowls |
Bowl weight matters more than customers expect. A 210 GSM bowl holds a side salad comfortably; the same bowl under a 700 ml soup load will soften at the seam. We specify GSM against your actual fill weight and hold time — tell us what goes in the bowl and how long it sits before it is eaten.
Coating Options: PE vs PLA vs Aqueous
PE (polyethylene)
The default for hot and wet food. Holds 90°C+ for 60 minutes without seam failure, resists oil and dressing, and carries the lowest unit cost of the three. Standard choice for soups, curries, and any menu item with a sauce component.
PLA (plant-based)
Compostable to EN 13432, made from plant starch. Best for cold and warm foods up to about 40 minutes of hot hold — it softens faster than PE above 90°C. The right choice for brands selling into EU markets or compost-collection programs.
Aqueous (repulpable)
Water-based barrier that lets the bowl go into the paper recycling stream rather than landfill. Handles short-hold hot foods and all cold applications. The compromise option when you want repulpability without the PLA cost premium.
If your market has no industrial composting infrastructure, a PLA bowl behaves like a non-recyclable plastic bowl with a higher carbon footprint. For most buyers in North America, PE for hot lines and aqueous or PLA for cold lines is the practical split. We quote all three against the same specification so you can compare landed cost honestly.
Custom Printing & Branding
Flexographic printing up to 6 colours, including full 360° wrap. Artwork in AI/PDF/EPS at 300 DPI with 3 mm bleed. Bowl printing is a curved-surface process — artwork files should be laid out as a flat development, and we always recommend a physical proof before mass production because uncoated kraft paper renders 20–30% darker than it appears on screen.
What can be printed
Brand logos, menu names, QR codes linking to allergen or nutrition pages, recycling instructions, and bilingual copy. Food-contact inks only on the inner surface — the printing sits on the outer wall.
Print area by size
Available print height scales with bowl depth — roughly 60–75% of the bowl wall for an 8 oz format, up to 85% on 24–32 oz formats. We supply the exact flat development per size.
Lids & accessories
Matching paper or PET lids, plus optional sleeve bands for hot beverages and small bowls. Lid fit is verified per bowl size — a lid that fits 12 oz will not reliably fit 16 oz.
Where Paper Salad Bowls Win
Salad bars & bowl concepts
The round format presents greens and toppings without the corners that trap dressing. Bowls photograph well from above — the format delivery platforms reward most. For leak resistance, lid fit and hot-holding, see takeaway & delivery packaging.
Delivery-first restaurants
Lighter than plastic per unit volume, nests tighter for storage, and holds sauces without seam wicking when specified at the right GSM and coating for the menu.
Catering & meal prep
24–32 oz formats with lids handle batch salads, grain bowls, and chilled meal-prep portions. PE coating survives the refrigerated hold; PLA suits chilled short-hold programs.
Soups & hot takeaway
12–24 oz with PE coating carries soup, ramen, and curries at 90°C+ for over an hour. Pair with matching lids for delivery.

Salad Bowls — Frequently Asked Questions
Are paper bowls suitable for hot soup?
Yes, with the right specification. A PE-coated bowl at 280 GSM or above holds 90°C+ soup for over an hour without seam failure. Choose 16 oz or larger for a full soup portion — an 8 oz bowl is a side-soup format and will feel small next to a main. For very hot, long-hold delivery, specify PE rather than PLA.
What is the difference between paper bowls and paper soup bowls?
In practice, the terms overlap. "Paper soup bowls" usually refers to the deeper formats (12–24 oz) designed around a liquid fill and typically paired with a paper or PET lid; "paper bowls" covers the same range plus the shallower formats used for salads and sides. Both are produced from the same food-grade paper with a barrier coating — the difference is depth, lid requirement, and the GSM needed to hold the fill.
Can salad bowls be compostable?
Yes — specify PLA coating on FSC-certified or recycled paper, and the bowl meets EN 13432 industrial compostability. Note the constraint: PLA softens faster than PE above 90°C, so a compostable bowl suits cold salads and short-hold warm foods better than long-hold hot soup. If your customer has no industrial composting access, an aqueous-coated bowl that recycles in the paper stream may be the more honest sustainability claim.
Are these bowls disposable food containers suitable for delivery platforms?
Yes. The round format photographs well from above, lids are available per size, and PE coating prevents dressing and sauce from wicking through the wall during a 30–60 minute delivery window. For delivery-heavy menus we recommend specifying the GSM against the heaviest load plus 10% headroom, and testing a full lid seal before committing to a print run.
What is the MOQ for custom printed salad bowls?
50,000 pieces per size and design for custom print. Plain white or kraft stock bowls are available at lower quantities. For a first order, many buyers start with one size in a plain stock bowl to validate fit and performance, then move to printed bowls once the menu is locked.
Do you supply matching lids?
Yes — paper lids for a fully fibre format, and PET lids where a leak-resistant seal matters more than mono-material recyclability. Lid fit is verified per bowl size; we do not recommend mixing a lid from one format with a bowl from another, even when the nominal diameters look close.
What certifications come with the bowls?
FDA food-contact documentation for US imports, EU 10/2011 compliance and a Declaration of Compliance for Europe, FSC chain-of-custody where FSC paper is specified, and EN 13432 for PLA-coated formats. Certificates travel with each shipment — see our quality page for the full list.
