Custom Food Packaging — OEM Printing, Tooling & MOQ
What "Custom" Actually Changes
Custom food packaging means one of three things — printed stock, modified dimensions, or a new tooled shape — and each carries a different MOQ, cost and lead time. Buyers often ask for "custom" when they mean "printed", and the conversation stalls at tooling quotes they did not need. Sorting the request into one of these three tiers is the first step in getting a useful quote.
Tier 1 — Printed stock
Same mould, your artwork. Lowest cost and shortest lead time. Typical MOQ 10,000–50,000 pieces depending on format. Adds 5–7 working days for plates and printing. This covers most brand programs.
Tier 2 — Modified dimensions
Existing construction adjusted in size or depth. Needs a tooling revision, quoted per project. MOQ rises to justify the change; lead time adds roughly one to two weeks over printed stock.
Tier 3 — New tooled shape
A new cavity, profile or closure. Highest MOQ because the tool is amortised across the order. Tooling typically 18–22 working days; MOQ commonly starts at 50,000–100,000 pieces.
The practical advice: start at the lowest tier that serves the brand. A well-printed stock box usually outperforms a bespoke shape with no print budget behind it — and it ships months earlier. If you are buying in volume rather than customising, see wholesale & bulk packaging.
Artwork & Print Requirements
| File formats | AI, PDF or EPS — vector, not raster |
| Resolution | 300 DPI at final print size for any embedded images |
| Bleed | 3 mm on all edges |
| Colour | Pantone for spot; CMYK for process. Specify which |
| Layout | Flat development for curved surfaces (cups, bowls) — we supply the template per size |
| Proof | Physical proof strongly recommended: uncoated kraft renders 20–30% darker than screen |
What Can Be Customised, by Format
| Format | Customisable | Typical MOQ | Added lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper cups 4–32 oz | Print up to 6 colours, wall type (single/double/ripple), coating, lid & sleeve | 50,000 pcs | +5–7 days |
| Paper bowls 8–32 oz | Print, size, coating (PE/PLA/aqueous), lid fitment | 30,000 pcs | +5–7 days |
| Kraft bags | Print, handle type (twisted/flat/die-cut), GSM 45–150, gusset | 20,000–30,000 pcs | +5–7 days |
| Food boxes & trays | Die-cut shape, venting, board grade, grease barrier, print | 10,000 pcs | +10–15 days |
| Clear PET / PP | Mould, wall thickness, anti-fog, paper sleeve | 5,000 pcs | +15–20 days |
| Molded pulp trays | Cavity shape, size, wall thickness, colour, print | 5,000–10,000 pcs | +18–22 days (tooling) |
Figures are typical ranges confirmed against your specific format and artwork — not a price list. Tooling is a one-off charge and typically USD 300–3,500 depending on complexity.
Two artwork problems cause most reprints: text too close to a fold or seam, and small QR codes that fail on textured board. Keep critical elements 5 mm inside any fold, and print QR modules at 20 mm minimum on kraft.
Custom Packaging — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MOQ for custom food packaging?
It depends on the tier. Printed stock: 10,000–50,000 pieces by format (bags often 30,000, cups 50,000, boxes 10,000). Modified dimensions: higher, because the tooling change must be amortised. New tooled shapes: commonly 50,000–100,000 pieces. We quote the specific MOQ against your format rather than a single blanket number.
Can I get custom printed paper bags?
Yes — flexo printing on kraft or white bags, typically one to four colours depending on the bag construction. MOQ commonly 20,000–30,000 pieces for custom print; plain stock bags are available in smaller quantities. Handle type (twisted, flat, die-cut) is chosen independently of print, so you can specify either.
How long does a custom order take?
Printed stock: 15–25 working days after sample approval, plus 5–7 days for printing. Modified dimensions add one to two weeks. New tooling adds 18–22 working days for the mould before production begins. Add ocean transit — 14–18 days to the US West Coast, 25–30 to the East Coast, 30–35 to Northern Europe.
Do you provide samples before production?
Yes, and we recommend a physical sample for every first order — especially for printed work and for any format where lid fit or stacking matters. Sample lead time is typically 7–10 days for stock items and 15–25 days for custom-printed or tooled products. Test with your actual product before approving.
What certifications apply to custom packaging?
The same as stock: FDA food-contact documentation for US imports, EU 10/2011 and a Declaration of Compliance for Europe, FSC chain-of-custody where certified paper is used, and EN 13432 for compostable formats. Custom print does not change the compliance requirement — inks and coatings must also be food-contact compliant. See the food grade packaging guide.
