Buying Packaging Wholesale: What Sets the Price

Wholesale packaging pricing is driven by order volume, container utilisation and print setup — not by a discount list. Two suppliers quoting the same unit price can differ by 20% at landed cost once container yield, pallet pattern and freight are counted. This page explains what actually moves the number, so you can compare quotes on equal terms. If your order also involves printed artwork or a new shape, read custom packaging services first — the tier you choose changes the MOQ on this page.

Volume thresholds

Unit cost steps down as MOQ tiers are crossed: stock items from a few thousand pieces, printed items typically 10,000–50,000, tooled formats 50,000+. The step from partial container to full container usually matters more than the step within a print run.

Container utilisation

A 40 ft high-cube holds 20–22 standard pallets. Carton dimensions and pallet pattern determine how much of that volume you actually pay for — a carton that nests badly can waste 10–15% of the container.

Print setup

Plate charges are per colour and amortised over the run. On a 30,000-piece run, a two-colour print setup is a small line item; on a 5,000-piece run it can exceed the material cost.

How to Compare Wholesale Quotes

Compare onWhy FOB unit price misleads
Landed cost per unitAdds freight, duty and destination charges — often 15–30% above FOB for packaging
Units per containerA cheaper unit price with poor pallet density can cost more per shipped unit
Carton & pallet specAsk for cartons per pallet, pallet dimensions and pallet height before deciding
Print setup treatmentConfirm whether plate charges are one-off or folded into the unit price
Lead time reliabilityA missing vessel can cost more than the discount a slower supplier offers

Also ask about mixed orders: consolidating several formats into one container reduces freight per unit and is one of the most reliable ways to lower landed cost without touching the unit price. Our food service packaging page covers how consolidation works in practice.

Mixed orders are allowed: each format keeps its own MOQ, but all formats can share one container. Confirm the exact MOQ against your specification — ranges move with size, colour count and board grade.

Wholesale Packaging — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the wholesale MOQ for paper bags?

Plain stock paper bags start from a few thousand pieces depending on size and handle type. Custom printed bags typically require 20,000–30,000 pieces per size and design, because the print plates must be amortised across the run. For a first order, plain stock is the usual way to validate handle strength and size before committing to print.

Can I mix formats in one container?

Yes, and it is one of the most effective ways to lower freight per unit. Cups, bowls, boxes, trays and bags produced in the same plant can be combined into one FOB Qingdao container. Each format keeps its own MOQ, but the container is filled across formats. The constraint is palletisation — mixing formats means more partial pallets, so we plan the loading arrangement with you rather than assuming it fits.

How do payment terms work for wholesale orders?

Standard terms for new customers are 30% deposit by T/T with the 70% balance before shipment; L/C at sight is accepted above USD 50,000. Terms are confirmed in writing with the order. See the terms and conditions for the full purchase terms.

What shipping terms do you quote?

FOB Qingdao is standard. CIF and DDP quotes are available if you prefer a landed price rather than arranging your own freight. The FOB Qingdao guide explains exactly where responsibility passes between buyer and seller under each term.

How long does a wholesale order take?

15–25 working days production after sample approval for stock formats, plus 5–7 days for custom print. Add ocean transit: 14–18 days to the US West Coast, 25–30 to the East Coast, 30–35 to Northern Europe, plus 5–7 days clearance and inland delivery. Plan 60–75 days from order to warehouse for the US West Coast.
