Food Service Packaging — Cups, Bowls, Boxes & Trays for Foodservice
One Supplier for the Whole Front Counter
Food service packaging is the disposable front-of-house range a food business hands to its customers: cups, lids, bowls, boxes, trays, bags and cutlery. For a café, quick-service restaurant, caterer or institutional kitchen, the cost of sourcing these from four different suppliers usually exceeds the price difference between them — consolidation lowers freight per unit, simplifies quality control, and means one specification conversation instead of four.
We manufacture the paper, plastic and molded pulp formats in one plant in Qingdao and ship them consolidated on FOB Qingdao terms. That is the practical difference this page describes: not a catalogue of formats, but what it takes to specify a coherent packaging range across a menu.
The Food Service Range
Hot & cold cups
4–20 oz single, double and ripple wall. PE, PLA or aqueous coating. Sip and dome lids matched per diameter, plus paper or corrugated sleeves.
Cup specifications →Bowls & salad containers
8–32 oz round paper bowls for soups, salads and grain bowls. PE for hot hold, PLA or aqueous for cold and compostable programs.
Bowl specifications →Boxes & cartons
Pizza boxes 7–20 inch, burger boxes, takeaway cartons and bakery boxes. E, B and BC-flute with die-cut venting where the menu needs it.
Box range →Trays & containers
PET and RPET thermoformed trays, clamshells and lidded containers for grab-and-go, deli and heated display cases.
Tray specifications →Carrier & takeaway bags
Kraft and white paper bags with twisted, flat or die-cut handles. Food-grade grades for direct contact with wrapped items.
Bag range →Molded pulp serviceware
Compostable trays and clamshell-style containers for catering and institutional dining, −40°C to 220°C in one material.
Pulp specifications →Specifying by Business Type
The same menu item served through different channels needs different packaging. These are the specifications that change most often in practice.
Coffee shops & cafés
Double-wall or ripple cups in 8/12/16 oz, 90 mm lids, corrugated sleeves. Double-wall removes the sleeve step for staff during a rush — the most common operational reason chains pay the premium.
Quick-service restaurants
Burger boxes and takeaway cartons in B-flute, plus PET clamshells for hot-hold display. Venting matters for fried items: sealed cartons steam and soften coatings within fifteen minutes.
Delivery-first kitchens
Lidded bowls and leak-resistant containers. Specify GSM against the heaviest load plus headroom, and test a full lid seal before committing to print — delivery failures are almost always lid failures.
Catering & institutions
24–32 oz bowls, compartment trays and molded pulp serviceware. Compostable formats matter more here because the venue frequently controls its own waste stream.
Material Decisions That Actually Matter
Paper, plastic and molded pulp are not interchangeable — each wins a specific set of conditions. The decision framework we use with buyers:
| Requirement | Best material | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hot liquid, long hold | PE-coated paper | Holds 90°C+ for 60+ minutes without seam failure; PLA softens faster above 90°C |
| Cold salad, compostable claim | PLA-coated paper or bagasse pulp | EN 13432 compliant and the cold fill does not test the PLA heat limit |
| Product visibility (deli, bakery) | PET / RPET | 88–92% light transmission; the product sells itself |
| Oven / microwave reheating | Molded pulp (bagasse) | −40°C to 220°C in one container; starch-based trays are not oven rated |
| Lowest unit cost at volume | PE paper or PP | Cheapest compliant options for their respective temperature ranges |
| EU PPWR 2026 simplicity | Molded pulp / paper | No plastic-content targets, no single-use plastic restrictions for fresh produce under 1.5 kg |
Food Service Packaging — Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in food service packaging?
The disposable range a food business hands to customers: cups and lids, bowls, boxes and cartons, trays and clamshells, carrier bags, sleeves and cutlery. It excludes back-of-house items such as storage containers and cleaning supplies. Most operators source the entire front-of-house range together to consolidate freight and reduce the number of supplier audits.
Can I order food service packaging wholesale from one supplier?
Yes — that is the main reason buyers consolidate with us. Cups, bowls, boxes, trays and bags are produced in one plant and can be combined into a single container on FOB Qingdao terms. Each format carries its own MOQ by size and design, but the container itself is filled across formats, which lowers freight cost per unit compared with shipping each format separately.
What is the difference between food service and food packaging?
Food service packaging is the front-of-house disposable range customers interact with (cups, bowls, boxes). Food packaging in the broader sense also covers retail and transport packaging — bakery boxes, produce trays, molded pulp insert trays, and the corrugated shippers behind them. We manufacture both; see the full product range for the retail and transport side.
Do you supply compostable food service packaging?
Yes: bagasse molded pulp trays and bowls (home and industrially compostable to EN 13432), PLA-coated paper cups and bowls, and aqueous-coated formats that recycle in the paper stream. The honest caveat is infrastructure — if your market has no industrial composting access, a PLA item behaves like a non-recyclable plastic item with a higher carbon footprint. Aqueous-coated paper is often the more defensible claim in those markets.
Can food service packaging be custom printed?
Yes across the range — flexo printing up to 6 colours on cups, bowls, boxes and bags. The MOQ varies by format (typically 10,000–50,000 pieces per size and design). Printing is on the outer surface with food-contact inks; we recommend a physical proof because uncoated kraft renders 20–30% darker than on screen.
What certifications apply to food service packaging?
FDA food-contact documentation for US imports (21 CFR 176.170 for paper, 177.1630 for PET), EU 10/2011 compliance and a Declaration of Compliance for Europe, FSC chain-of-custody where certified paper is specified, and EN 13432 for compostable formats. Certificates travel with each shipment — see our quality page for the full certificate set.
